I’m working on some analysis of the music that comes out of human+computer music performances. One of the problems is working out what I should/could be looking for. There is a shit-ton of analysis of notes-on-paper music, a little of electroacoustic/acousmatic, hardly any of improv. Following the EA route as the closest match, the idea of ‘carriers of meaning’ comes up. For pre-composed music this makes sense, but does the idea have any place in improv (acoustic, electro or mixed)? When I’m improvising I am interested in sound almost exclusively, meaning not really coming into it. I get the sense too that system designers are looking for cool sounds, interesting interactions etc rather than producing ‘meaning’. If it is an inappropriate idea then looking for meaning may be a bit of a red herring.
