PhD synopsis (so far)

Performing with improvisation-driven music systems.

I am looking at instrument + computer music from the instrumentalist’s point of view. There has been much written about the computer systems but relatively little about what it is like to play with them as an instrumentalist. I am specifically interested in systems that require no outside control (mediation) during performance, able to be started and then left alone, with interaction achieved through audio alone.

The general areas that I seem to be exploring are:

  • Is a system a work? (And why might that matter?
  • Do the various systems available allow an overarching performance practice
  • In terms of how the improvisation is influenced, what are the commonalities between systems, what are the differences?
